VOLCANIC NATURE
The denomination Campi Flegrei derives from the Greek phlegraios (ardent), clear reference to the intense volcanic activity in the area. To the volcanism and the frequent seismic events numerous phenomena are connected typical of the fields flegrei: rising termominerali, volcanic fumarole and above all the bradisismo, characteristic phenomenon of this zone, a due slow and alternate vertical movement of the terrestrial crust to goes up again it of masses magmatiche and to their cooling. This phenomenon is particularly evident along the coastal zone, where the level of the sea furnishes a quota of reference.
The columns of the Temple of Serapide to Pozzuoli (in reality a food market) show the perforations of the sea (litodomi) molluscs to a height of m. 6.30 (+9 ses.l.m.), evident sign of the submersion and the risollevamento of the ground. It was the bradisismo to sink in age tardoantica the whole coastal band.
